Will Pokémon Winds & Waves Be on Switch 1? Platform Guide

Is Pokémon Winds & Waves on the original Switch?

No — Switch 2 exclusive. The official site and press materials state it directly: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves release worldwide in 2027 “exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.” There is no Nintendo Switch 1 version, and none has been announced for mobile or other platforms.

Why is it Switch 2 only?

Officially, nothing beyond the exclusivity statement has been explained. Unofficially, the reasoning writes itself: the trailer shows a dense open world — streaming biomes from jungle to coral reef to lava cave (see the breakdown) — that fits Switch 2’s newer hardware, and a 2027 launch puts the game firmly inside Switch 2’s lifecycle. Treat any deeper technical claim as inference, not fact.

What about backward compatibility?

Not relevant here — backward compatibility means playing old games on new hardware, and Switch 2 does run Switch 1 games. The question is moot: W&W is new hardware only, so a Switch 1 can’t run it at all. If you’re planning hardware around this game, Switch 2 is the requirement; pricing and bundles are a Nintendo question, not a Pokémon one.

Anything else platform-specific worth knowing?

Two official details worth flagging: Winds & Waves is the first mainline entry to support Brazilian Portuguese at launch, and the games got their own announcement at Pokémon Day 2026. For the launch-timing side, see the release-date tracker.
